What is Yoga

Yoga is a system of integrated practices which are designed to help ward off or slow the aging processes of the body, mind and spirit and to keep the physical and mental faculties strong. Yoga has five major components:

  • Proper exercise or Asanas

  • Proper breathing or Pranayama

  • Proper relaxation or Savasana

  • Proper diet - Typically vegetarian, cleansing and balancing, and

  • Positive thinking and meditation also called Vedanta and Dhyana

The purpose of yoga is to develop each of these five components to have a healthy body and mind, to delay the aging process to keep the physical and mental faculties strong.

Class Descriptions

Sivananda Yoga -All Levels This class includes the classic Sivananda twelve posture yoga series, and is geared toward the practitioner with familiarity with yoga. Emphasizing self-pacing, each student can take the posture to the level that they are comfortable with.  Meditative yet challenging. Generally includes 30 minutes of Pranayama.

Pranayama - Pranayama is considered a key element of the practice of yoga, facilitating both deeper levels of mental relaxation and cleansing of the body. Pranayama focuses on breath awareness and breathing techniques for health. Pranayama practice is excellent for both beginning and experienced practitioners of yoga. Pranayama is included in the Yoga for All Levels classes.

Wise Women - Throughout their lifespan women go through hormonal changes on a cyclical basis, starting with puberty and ending after menopause. When properly channeled, this hormonal fire can become an asset instead of a liability. This class is for women who are premenstrual, prenatal, peri-menopausal, pooped out, or just perturbed with the status quo and looking to move up a notch or two on the wellness ladder. Translation: this class is for all women!

Taught by Chris O'Brien, a woman of many hats, some of which include wife, registered nurse, mother of teenagers, health writer, yoga instructor, sibling to seven, and friend to many, the 75 minute class will focus on asanas (yoga poses) that help build strength, flexibility and balance in life by fostering a micro-community of women sadhakas (seekers) interested in experiencing how basic yoga poses improve physical and mental health throughout the lifespan.

Come and find your place with other women of all ages (from older teens to empty nesters and beyond) who want to grow in strength, flexibility and wisdom.  To read more about Chris and her class go to her blog at http://yogabasics-chrisob.blogspot.com/

Prenatal Yoga - Learn to use yoga postures, breath work and meditation to nurture, relax, strengthen and open as you move towards labor, motherhood and beyond. This slowly flowing class is appropriate for women during each stage of pregnancy, whether you have previous yoga experience or not. Currently integrated into WISE WOMEN YOGA -see above.

Meditation - The Heart of Yoga - This group provides a supportive atmosphere for participants to deepen their practice of meditation. Fundamental principles and philosophy of yoga are incorporated to guide us in our exploration of various meditation techniques. Each session will also include asanas and pranayama to strengthen and relax the body and to focus the mind.  Pre-registration is required for this series.
